The National Association of Black Journalists convention kicks off in the “Big D” today with a lineup of “Super Workshops.”

With a few thousand journalists coming to Dallas from all over the nation looking to attend workshops, seminars, and panels throughout the convention, what makes the Super Workshops a must for convention goers? “The workshops are hands-on and highly interactive,” says Tangie Newborn, NABJ’s Executive Director.

The Super Workshops this year are: “Breaking Into the Big League”, “The Long Story,” “Crafting the Story,” “Crossing Over,” “Assignment 2004” and “Preparing the Next Generation,” one of last year’s most successful sessions for students.

Over the past five years the Super Workshops have grown in popularity. This year more than 140 people pre-registered for the six sessions that are produced by the NABJ Media Institute.

In years past, the Super Workshops have been geared toward professionals. It wasn’t until last year that the first Super Workshop for students took place. “Last year’s student workshop was highly successful, being the very first one, ” said Tiffany Black, outgoing NABJ Student Representative and Online News Editor for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Marisa Phillips, a senior at Delaware State University, who attended last year’s student Super Workshop said, “The workshops are a great place for students to get their resumes critiqued in an environment that you just don’t get in a regular workshop.” The workshop gave nearly 100 students a head start on what recruiters are looking for in a young black journalist.
