Dallas attendance exceeds expectationsBy NELLIE BRADLEY Monitor Staff The number of participants pre-registered for NABJ’s 2003 convention in Dallas is running significantly higher than that of last year’s convention in Milwaukee, NABJ officials said. Tangie Newborn, NABJ’s executive director, said that as of Tuesday, 2,246 attendees had registered for the convention. Roughly 1,500 had pre-registered at the same time last year in Milwaukee. Newborn said there was no clear explanation for the increase. She had anticipated this year’s convention would draw roughly 1,800 pre-registrants, so the increase represents good news for the financial health of the organization. “I believe in overpromise and overdeliver, so this year my expectations were definitely met.” She said the higher number might be the result of an increase in first-time participants in the convention. Newborn said she didn’t have an exact figure, but she attributed the upsurge to increased interest in the election and the job fair. Also, the location of this year’s convention in Dallas hasn’t hurt. “Dallas is a larger city than Milwaukee, so that might be why attendance has increased,” Newborn speculated. The job fair attracted first-time conventioneer Larry Williams to Dallas. With a stack of résumés in his hand, and a writing pad for notes, he is getting his first real broadcast journalism experience in Dallas. Williams, a fourth-year student at the University of Florida and a participant in the student projects, has high expectations of his trip. “I am really excited to be here,” he said. “I look forward to going to all the workshops, especially the job fair.” Nellie Bradley is a student at Howard University in Washington, D.C. he can be reached at nellienabj@hotmail.com |
