Times aiming to increase membership

Kathy Times says being a part of four NABJ affiliate chapters has given her the experience she'll need to further develop the affiliate chapters.

Times is the secretary of the Birmingham Association of Black Journalists. She has been president of the Jackson chapter and vice president of broadcast of the South Florida and Kansas City chapters.

She is an investigative reporter at WVTM-TV, the NBC-owned station in Birmingham, Ala.

In 2002, Times won the Alabama AP Award for best investigative reporting for uncovering shortcuts taken on major bridge construction projects.

Times' first job was at The Tampa Tribune. She went on to report at broadcast stations in Miami, Mobile, Ala., Kansas City, and Gainesville, Fla.

She graduated from Florida A&M University with a degree in journalism and computer information systems and received her master's degree from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.

Times plans to focus on increasing membership by "empowering and strengthening" the affiliate chapters. She says it's time to develop a uniform program for all affiliate chapters to follow in order to make the chapters more visible and ultimately increase membership in NABJ.

One of her goals is increasing the number of black journalists in newsrooms and in management positions.

Times says she can accomplish this by reaching out to black-owned media outlets and organizations, such as the NAACP, that can reach people in ways NABJ cannot.
