Class is in sessionBy April Bethea Monitor Staff Melanie L. Burney, an education reporter at The Philadelphia Inquirer, has been an NABJ member since 1992. She served two terms as president of the Garden State Association of Black Journalists, including when it was named NABJ Chapter of the Year in 1996. A year later, Burney was deputy director of Region II. She also has been an assignment editor for The NABJ Monitor during conventions in Orlando, Fla., and Phoenix. Burney said she hopes her experience and knowledge of parliamentary procedures will help to guide NABJ during debates over its governance and board structure, and in ongoing discussions over constitutional amendments. She also hopes to advise chapters on how to properly conduct meetings, elections and other chapter business. Burney previously worked at the Courier-Post in Cherry Hill, N.J., and spent 14 years as an Associated Press correspondent. |
